10 Reasons Why I LOVE Getting Older
from THE GYM RAT'S DAILY SQUEAKS

Pete Townshend of The Who was 20 years old in 1965 when he wrote “I hope I die before I get old” in the song “My Generation”. I don’t believe he was hoping to take the course of his bandmate Keith Moon who died at 32 young years of age. Pete could have phrased it better by saying “As long as I live, I hope to never grow old”. Of course, much of the rhythmic flow would have been screwed up, so I supposed it is best left as he wrote it.
Therefore, when I speak of how much I love getting older, I speak only chronologically. Those who are closest to me know without a doubt that the idea of this Gym Rat showing any signs of maturing mentally, emotionally, or socially are non-existent.
So, what is it I love about the difference between the present and the year 1961 growing bigger all the time, while inside I’m holding on to 16 as long as I can? Here are my top ten reasons.
10. My wife and I love it when people say “Really, you have a ___ year old daughter? WOAH!” And the number in that blank gets bigger every year, and accordingly, so does the WOAH!
9. As I get older, dogs and cats seem to like me more and more. Not sure why, but I think they are starting to see themselves in me.
8. As younger people enter the workplace, less and less of them know about things like The Honeymooners, Woodstock, The Chicago Blizzard of ‘67, and The King Family Christmas Specials. They need somebody to teach them about these things. I LOVE to be needed!
7. IF I were to choose to take up inhaling the funny stuff again (it’s been decades), it will be much more believable when I say “Your Honor, it was for medicinal purposes.”
6. One year closer to discounted coffee.
5. Until these past two years, I would have said “One year closer to retirement.” I haven’t heard many people talking about retirement lately… Not even Brett Favre!
4. Getting older gave me voicemail, email, the internet, cell phones, digital TV, and this blog. When I’m a little older next year, what else will I have? A Chicago-Chicago World Series? Hmm… better settle for an iPad.
3. Allow me one serious one here – When you are young, you work out (weights, swimming, running, biking, whatever you do) because it is a good idea. You become a little older, and it becomes a habit. Then it becomes part of your life. Then it becomes part of who you are. And as you age, you come to realize that what it really has been, the whole time, is a GIFT!
2. It’s fun being an aging Baby Boomer because who, along with millions of others just like me, have pretty much flooded Facebook and took all the fun away from the teenagers who started it!!!
1. Of course, you guessed it… Say it out loud…. IT’S BETTER THAN THE ALTERNATIVE!
I leave you with a little irony. One thing associated with old age is hearing loss. Take a look at this video of “My Generation”, mentioned at the beginning of this post. At 2:30 of the video, Pete Townshend (on the right of the screen) receives a taste of old age by receiving permanent hearing loss. Just watch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9-JdubfUCw
