Common Health Issues Faced During Pregnancy

As a medical doctor, I see a number of women who want to guard the happiness they are expecting from any problem and stress a lot when they face any common health issue as it might affect their child too. For example, Mr. and Mrs. Jonas visited me last week and both were stressing that it can harm their child. I asked them to stop stressing as that might harm their child and then told them headaches are common in the first trimester.

There are a number of common problems which are usually seen in pregnancy. It doesn’t mean that the gynecologist is to be avoided; it just means that there are ways in which these can be tackled at home. Following are some of the common issues faced by pregnant women:

* Dull headaches or pain at the back of the neck are common during the first trimester (like the good old Mrs. Jonas). It can be caused due to hormonal changes, dehydration, fatigue, lack of sleep and/or eyestrain. Therefore, plenty of water should be drunk and the mother should also eat frequently. Also, going for meditation and yoga classes can also be used as a relaxation technique.

* Abdominal stretching pain can be felt from the second trimester. It is because the ligaments are thickening to support the uterus. It can also occur due to gas and/or constipation which can be prevented by reducing fiber foods, taking fluid in between meals and eating small meals. Also, changing position can comfort in case of ligament thickening.

* Many women experience insomnia because of excitement, backache, headache or a frequent need to urinate. This can be cured by taking massage or bath before sleep, avoid eating anything before sleep, ensuring stable room temperature or listening to music or reading books (to relax the body and mind) when above methods don’t work.

* The skin color also changes many times because of increase in the melanin hormone. These generally go after delivery, but one can reduce their formation by avoiding going out in the sun or using sun blocks while going out.
