What I Worry About - Thoughts About Health - I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on the subject!
“Mark, you have to loosen up, you’re too stiff. You dance like a military officer.”
“Mark, your chest, shoulders, and neck are so rigid that you can’t get any range in your voice.”
“Mark, you can’t get any spring into your kicks because your body is too stiff and rigid.”
“Mark, loosen up a little when you attack, or you’ll be too slow.”
My dance class partner, my singing instructor, my martial arts master, and my sword-fighting mentor, respectively.
There is a little bit of a pattern in there, wouldn’t you say? Four instructors can’t be wrong. However, for the most part, I haven’t been working very much this past year, and had a lot of time, mainly in the sunshine and fresh air, to reflect upon…well, everything. And I came to realize that most of my stress was truly over stupid-ass little things that I either can’t change, or are not worth the effort to change.
I am WAY more relaxed now, and feeling better and enjoying life more now because of it. Not that I am going to take up the humiliation of trying to sing high notes, or enduring the purple bruises and swollen knuckles of sword fighting again, but there are a million things I haven’t tried yet, and whatever they turn out to be, I’m going to give “relaxed” a try now.
HOWEVER!!! All that said, it doesn’t mean that my mind is completely free of worry. This past year, I failed to convince businesses to invest in the benefits and joys of wellness and fitness. I have also communicated with hundreds of friends and colleagues in the wellness industry, and I’ve developed some theories and opinions that are quite worrisome.
- I worry about the obesity that has been growing in this country over the past few decades, and is showing no sign of slowing down.
- I worry that poor physical health is affecting not only the elderly and the middle-aged, but children as well.
- I worry that companies do not care about their employees’ health except for a few occasional words on the subject.
- I worry that the government is so financed and influenced by medical and pharmaceutical interests, that very profitable “Sick Care” will remain the paradigm of national health instead of real ”Health Care” which brings great benefits for everyone EXCEPT those interests.
- I worry that many Americans complain about a inadequate health care system, but do very little to sustain their own health.
- I worry that Nick Mason, David Gilmour, and Roger Waters may never unite to record or tour Pink Floyd again.
- I worry that video games, and even Wii with limited physical activity, will continue to replace baseball mitts, ice skates, skis, pogo sticks, bicycles, jump ropes, golf clubs, basketballs, hockey sticks, and running shoes under Christmas Trees and Menorahs.
- I worry when I see young people (and old people for that matter) smoke.
But then I take a deep breath, exhale, and smile. “People will come around” I tell myself.
