What I Worry About - Thoughts About Health - I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts on the subject!

From THE GYM RAT'S DAILY SQUEAKS

“Mark, you have to loosen up, you’re too stiff.  You dance like a military officer.”

“Mark, your chest, shoulders, and neck are so rigid that you can’t get any range in your voice.”

“Mark, you can’t get any spring into your kicks because your body is too stiff and rigid.”

“Mark, loosen up a little when you attack, or you’ll be too slow.”

My dance class partner, my singing instructor, my martial arts master, and my sword-fighting mentor, respectively.

There is a little bit of a pattern in there, wouldn’t you say?  Four instructors can’t be wrong.  However, for the most part, I haven’t been working very much this past year, and had a lot of time, mainly in the sunshine and fresh air, to reflect upon…well, everything.  And I came to realize that most of my stress was truly over stupid-ass little things that I either can’t change, or are not worth the effort to change.

I am WAY more relaxed now, and feeling better and enjoying life more now because of it.  Not that I am going to take up the humiliation of trying to sing high notes, or enduring the purple bruises and swollen knuckles of sword fighting again, but there are a million things I haven’t tried yet, and whatever they turn out to be, I’m going to give “relaxed” a try now.

HOWEVER!!!  All that said, it doesn’t mean that my mind is completely free of worry.  This past year, I failed to convince businesses to invest in the benefits and joys of wellness and fitness.  I have also communicated with hundreds of friends and colleagues in the wellness industry, and I’ve developed some theories and opinions that are quite worrisome.

  • I worry about the obesity that has been growing in this country over the past few decades, and is showing no sign of slowing down.
  • I worry that poor physical health is affecting not only the elderly and the middle-aged, but children as well.
  • I worry that companies do not care about their employees’ health except for a few occasional words on the subject.
  • I worry that the government is so financed and influenced by medical and pharmaceutical interests, that very profitable “Sick Care” will remain the paradigm of national health instead of real  ”Health Care” which brings great benefits for everyone EXCEPT those interests.
  • I worry that many Americans complain about a inadequate health care system, but do very little to sustain their own health.
  • I worry that Nick Mason, David Gilmour, and Roger Waters may never unite to record or tour Pink Floyd again.
  • I worry that video games, and even Wii with limited physical activity, will continue to replace baseball mitts, ice skates, skis, pogo sticks, bicycles, jump ropes, golf clubs, basketballs, hockey sticks, and running shoes under Christmas Trees and Menorahs.
  • I worry when I see young people (and old people for that matter) smoke.

But then I take a deep breath, exhale, and smile.  “People will come around” I tell myself.

Yeah, Mark, I understand you.
Recently I've read the terrible report which states that ukrainiain (I live in Ukraine :)) teenagers hold the 1st place in the world in amounts of alcohol they drink!!!
It seems to me this happens because they lack some vision of their future life, they lack the inspiring goals. So, when they see no perspectives, only the thing is left is to drink alcohol and take drugs...
Therefore I have a dream of building the Person Development Center in Kyiv (the capital of Ukraine), so that people in Ukraine would understand what they really want from life, set the goals and turn their energy not to drinks but to achieving their highest dreams!!!

I completely agree but from another angle. I am overweight but still see it your way (this would be another whole discussion for me somewhere else).
• The FDA allows dangerous additives, pesticides and all kinds of stuff in our foods and medicine to keep us relatively healthy but sick enough to make tons of money. The amount of sugar in our food should not be allowed but this is what we have grown accustomed to, unfortunately. Keeping our bodies oxidized would essentially keep our cells operating at the healthy level they were designed to work at which should maximize our immune system to work correctly but this is not sought after. I believe our healthcare system does not put enough emphasis on true nutrition, using foods and herbs as the real source for our depleted vitamins and minerals that our bodies are being robbed of from bad foods.
• I will bring up a controversial point : I think we might be so connected online that we don’t connect enough in person which might contribute to a decrease in getting up and out and moving for a live interaction. I would venture to add that television is in that category as well in that we watch people interacting instead of us living our own lives.
• At least we don’t have to worry about Van Halen who might be getting back together after Eddie’s wedding and honeymoon and kid’s graduation.
• I do believe companies owe it to themselves to take an interest because a healthy worker is a happy worker is a good worker. I think they are taking a monetary approach nowadays, charging higher premiums for less healthy individuals. That might be a good incentive…..

Bravo Suzanne! I think all your points are great, and I particularly LOVE your point about person to person interaction. Not only would going out and meeting people face to face burn more calories, but it also has a critical positive effect on stress reduction which, as we all know, has hundreds of health benefits. The human animal, like most other mammals, needs physical/social interaction with others to reassure itself that "everything is alright in the tribe." Eye contact, body language, handshakes, hugs, non-sexual touches... all of these between acquaintances, old and new, are really healthy for us. Heck, even with Eddie Van Halen!

Thumbs Up, Suzanneks, for your statement regarding being connected online!
You put it excellent!
I agree with you that online connection puts me away from real 'live' interaction with people, substituting them with virtual friends.

What about the foods that we have to eat? You don't know what the 30,000 additives food companies are allow to put in food but don't need to tell us. From the Associate Press The vaccine additive thimerosal is not to blame for autism, a special U.S. court ruled Friday in a long-running battle by parents convinced there is a connection.
While expressing sympathy for the parents involved in the emotionally charged cases, the court concluded they had failed to show a connection between the mercury-containing preservative and autism.
Worry about a vaccine link first arose in 1998 when a British physician, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, published a medical journal article linking a particular type of autism and bowel disease to the measles vaccine. The study was later discredited.

I really believe there some conspiracy for company to earn their money, whether we want it or not.
I don't believe there so many strain of flu, like the HK flu, bird flu the swine flu. I sure there going to be a money flu that will come around sometime so the drug companies will their money every year. So far I never caught one of them. I don't take shots for them. I am sixty now
